Managing Systems Complexity via Refinement in OPM Models

Complexity is inherent in natural and artificial systems. Modeling complex systems effectively requires that the modeling language be formal yet simple and expressive. A built-in refinement mechanism for easily traversing across levels of details is needed in order to maintain the big picture while focusing on some low-level detail.

Object-Process Methodology (OPM) is presented and demonstrated as a conceptual modeling language that combines graphics and text for catering to these requirements. The status of ISO standardization of OPM is also discussed briefly.
